Possibly My Greatest Rant Ever

I don't really have much from real life to talk about. Went to get fingerprinted today, so I can apply for my FBI police records. It's annoying because I have to send the application to the FBI and then when I get the record back and send it to the State Department to get the apostille, and then take it to Spain and do lots more. Even worse, all this paperwork for my visa costs hundreds of dollars between the various fees.

I also went grocery shopping and then to the gym. I just walked on the treadmill for a while, but it was very nice. It's amazing how much working out helps with my depression. I have my training session tomorrow so Bob can show me some resistance exercises. Woot!

Moving on:
24. Rant about Steve Kloves something

Well, I think everyone already knows how much I hate Steve Kloves, so I'm going to rant about something else.

God, I hate him SO FUCKING MUCH. I can't even fathom his total nonchalance about his part, his refusal to take any interest in the books, or in Jo's world as a whole. I know that some of the problems with how Dumbledore is portrayed in the movies are due to Steve Kloves writing, but if Gambon had made even a tiny bit of an effort to understand his character he would understand that things like Dumbledore shaking Harry is just so wrong. I understand that Dumbledore is supposed to be a badass, but the way he's been in the last few movies is just ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, I still hate Dumbledore, but that doesn't mean I can even try to accept Gambon's total lack of respect for Jo.

Let's take a look at some of the things he's said in interviews:

Gambon learned of the demise of his character in book six from a newspaper, and has a request for the author:
It was such a shock. I thought, Jesus Christ. I'm sure if she reads this article, she might think, 'Ah, poor bloke. I'll put him in the seventh book as a ghost.' If she would kindly just put me in there.

Are you fucking serious? If you had any understanding, yet alone respect, for Jo's work, you would understand that she had carefully planned things like Dumbledore's return and that she would not change it just to fit the whims of a stupid actor.

What makes Dumbledore the greatest wizard of all time?

I have no idea. I just say what the script tells me to say. I learn the lines and say them – I don’t have much sub-text. There’s no sub-text in Harry Potter really, it’s all magic. Anything can happen.

Even actors who don't read the books of their movies don't go around saying "I have no idea" when asked questions about their character. Who else shows such a total disregard for their character? And how can you say that you have no subtext. Dumbledore is complicated character -- that's evident even from the "socks" line in the first book, and if he took even 30 seconds to talk to Jo about his character, he could know a lot of subtext. I saw that, in other interviews, he seems to say that there IS in fact subtext, but he still doesn't seem to show any real understanding of it.

Quint: How did you approach that scene in particular… not just the death scene, but the entire lead up?

Michael Gambon: He knows the end is near, doesn’t he? He knows what’s going on, he knows it has to happen. He lives with it. He’s a fatalist. Tom (Felton) can’t do it. He backs out. He can’t cope with it. And then it’s left to (Alan) Rickman, who enjoyed killing Dumbledore.

Quint: (laughs) I can imagine!

Michael Gambon: It’s good, rich stuff.

Quint: That one scene says so much about so many of the characters, it’s the linchpin of the series to me. We see Malfoy’s character and after the events of the 7th book play out and we see Snape’s backstory…

Michael Gambon: Yes. Good. I’ve never read one of the books. I just read the scripts. That’s all we’ve got, really, isn’t it? They’ve been discussing it here, downstairs, how you don’t really need to read the book if you’re in the film because so much of the story is cut, so it’s best just to stick to Steve Kloves’ words. There’s a lot of good subtext in it.

Quint: Have you read the script for the 7th movie?

Michael Gambon: No, I haven’t had it yet because I’m not wanted until next February. They’re shooting my bit after Christmas.

Quint: But you know how you play in the next movie, yeah?

Michael Gambon: I’m a ghost, is that right?

Quint: You’re also a painting, I think.

Michael Gambon: There’s a long scene as a ghost with Harry, where I appear to him.

Quint: It could have been very easy for JK Rowling to cop-out, but it would have taken everything away from your moment in this story if Dumbledore had just popped up fine and dandy in the next film. I’m glad she found a way to bring Dumbledore back into the story without taking anything away from his sacrifice.

Michael Gambon: Yeah, sure, sure. I’m glad as well because I need the money! (laughs)

Where to even start? How about the fact that Snape definitely did not enjoy killing Dumbledore, and that might have been something important to know! His view that there's no point in reading the books is FUCKING RIDICULOUS. I guess I don't know that much about acting, but don't many actors focus on their character's backstory and motivation? Apparently, Ralph Fiennes and Alan Rickman haven't read the books either, but there's a huge difference between them and Gambon, especially since I know that Rickman took the time to talk to Jo about Snape and learn her ultimate intentions for him. Neither of them show any sort of disrespect for the series like Gambon does.

That is all.

P.S. I'm about to do a party post for my 400th!
