I Hunt For You: A Hunger Games Fanmix

I've had this fanmix on the brain for a while, and spent a long time choosing the songs, so I hope you like it! When choosing the songs, I paid attention to both the sound and the lyrics, and chose the songs that to me most clearly evoked the feeling of the series, of the characters, and of District 12. Spoilers for all three books below the cut; songs follow the order of events in the series, for the most part.

1. Chop and Change -- The Black Keys -- Katniss Everdeen

"She said, 'She's a survivor, that one.'"

This song came on my iPod during one of the days when I was reading the series for the first time, and the connection was immediate.

2. Boy With A Coin -- Iron & Wine -- The Boy With The Bread

A boy with a coin he found in the weeds
With bullets and pages of trade magazines
Close to a car that flipped on the turn
When God left the ground to circle the world

A girl with a bird she found in the snow
Then flew up her gown and that’s how she knows
That God made her eyes for crying at birth
Then left the ground to circle the Earth

Beautiful, tragic song for District 12.

3. Confession -- Richard Shindell -- Haymitch Abernathy

Hey Doc, how's about a refill?
Hey Doc, pretty little blue pill...
Hey Doc, how's about a refill?

For the other District 12 Victor/tragedy.

4. Stadium Love -- Metric -- The Hunger Games

Every living thing
Pushed into the ring
Fight it out to wow the crowd
Guess he thought
We could just watch
But no one's getting out.

A song not just for the 74th Hunger Games, but really for all the Games in the series, including the Games that eventually destroyed the Capitol.

5. Never Say Never -- The Fray -- Gale and Katniss

You're the queen of everything
Far as the eye can see
Under your command
I will be your guardian
When all is crumbling
Steady your hand

Catching Fire Gale and Katniss

6. Something To Sleep To -- Michelle Branch -- Katniss and Peeta

She's his yellow-brick-roader
Leading him on
And letting him go
As far as she lets him go
...
How could I ever have been so blind?
You give me something to sleep to at night

Catching Fire Katniss and Peeta

7. Between Two Lungs -- Florence + the Machine -- Cinna and Katniss

Only one person could have designed the outfit, at first glance utterly utilitarian, at second a work of art. The swoop of the helmet, the curve to the breastplate, the flight fullness of the sleeves that allows the white folds under the arms to show. In his hands, I am again a mockingjay.
"Cinna," I whisper. [. . .]
I turn the pages slowly, seeing each detail fo the uniform. The carefully tailored layers of body armour, the hidden weapons in the boots and belt, the special reinforcements over my heart. On the final page, under a sketch of my mockingjay pin, Cinna's written, I'm still betting on you.

A tribute to Cinna, and the power and life he gave to Katniss.

8. Après Moi -- Regina Spektor -- The Victors and The Capitol

I must go on standing
You can't break that which isn't yours
I must go on standing
I'm not my own, it's not my choice

This song, to me, perfectly represents the attitudes of various Victors -- Finnick, Johanna, Katniss, Haymitch -- and their drive to keep living and keep fighting.

9. Howl -- Florence + the Machine -- Katniss and Peeta

If you could only see the beast you've made of me
I held it in but now it seems you've set it running free
Screaming in the dark, I howl when we're apart
Drag my teeth across your chest to taste your beating heart

A song for Katniss and Peeta's physical, mental, and emotional separation during Mockingjay.

10. Ungodly Hour -- The Fray -- Gale and Katniss

Her bag is now much heavier
I wish that I could carry her
But this is our ungodly hour

A song for Gale and Katniss's broken relationship at the end of Mockingjay.

11. So Says The Whippoorwill -- Richard Shindell -- Victor's Village

The change could happen any day
So say my true love’s eyes
They see into my shadows
With their sweet, forgiving light
She smiles and says, Come on - let’s go
Let’s stroll the boulevard
It’s such a shame to waste the night
Just sitting in the dark

A beautiful song about just living life -- to me, a perfect fit for the end of the series.

I hope you enjoy it!
